A day after toughening its stand on government formation, the PDP legislature party today authorised Mehbooba Mufti to put her party’s viewpoint before Governor NN Vohra, who invited her for consultations on Tuesday.
In a unanimous decision, the lawmakers made it clear that they were ready for midterm polls if the need arose, indicating that the party might continue its tough stand unless assurances were given to it on the “Agenda of Alliance” at the highest level.
The PDP held its first legislature party meeting today, nearly four weeks after the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, to discuss government formation. The meeting at the Fairview residence ended without electing Mehbooba as their leader, which was another indication that government formation was not a priority for her, but she wanted an assurance on the time-bound implementation of the “Agenda of Alliance”.
“The party legislators authorised Mehbooba to convey its viewpoint on government formation to the Governor tomorrow,” said senior leader Naeem Akhter.
Vohra has called Mehbooba Mufti and state BJP chief Sat Sharma for a meeting tomorrow to clarify their stand.
Sources said Mehbooba told MLAs that the “party has not toughened its stand” on government formation with the BJP and there were “no fresh conditions”.
“Mehbooba said everything had been agreed upon and the PDP wanted time-bound implementation of “Agenda of Alliance” aimed at addressing core political and economic issues,” said a lawmaker.
“She said the party would form the government only if it was convinced that the vision and mission of Mufti Saheb would be carried forward and implemented in letter and spirit,” he said.
Mehbooba, who termed the alliance with the BJP an unpopular decision, explained reasons behind the delay in government formation.
The sources said no lawmaker spoke against the alliance, but they told the party president that they were with her.
“When an MLA asked whether they were ready for elections, all those in attendance said they were ready for midterm polls if the need arose,” a source said.
