With no headway on government formation yet, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti today asked her party workers to be ready for either situation —- a new government or fresh elections.
She said this during a meeting with delegations at the party office here this afternoon which had come to express their condolences on the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and get directions for the future course of action.
“Mehboobaji asked us to express our views on government formation. We told her that whatever decision she will take will be acceptable to one and all. She then told us to be prepared for the formation of the new government and if that doesn’t happen then for the elections,” said a PDP leader who was part of a delegation to meet the party president.
Mehbooba is unwilling to move ahead on government formation until Prime Minister Narendra Modi gives her an assurance on confidence-building measures (CBMs). But so far she has not received any communication from the BJP top brass.
The PDP-BJP government fell apart on January 7 after the death of sitting Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed. Governor’s rule was imposed in the state with effect from January 8 when Mehbooba showed no interest in government formation and continuing the coalition with the right-wing BJP. Both parties claim that the alliance is still intact but none is sure when they will form the government.
Mehbooba is camping in Jammu since February 2 when she had a meeting with the Governor about government formation.
Sources told The Tribune that so far the PDP hasn’t received any communication from the Centre on these CBMs and no forward movement is expected very soon. “Mehbooba is meeting very few people in the guest house where she is staying for the past three days. Even party leaders don’t have easy access to the area,” said a source.
Meanwhile, the PDP has called for a meeting of office-bearers of the Jammu region tomorrow. The party president is likely to call for a membership drive at the district level.
