Gurudwara Nanaksar - Southall

60 Kingsbridge Crescent ,Southall ,Middlesex
UK

I had Been thr n lived 2 days !:)

The The Gurdwara Nanaksar is situated in the town of Southall in west London. It was the second Gurdwara to be built in England, UK, and is situated in a mainly residential area where a lot of Sangat live locally or a short drive away.

The land for the Southall Nanaksar Gurdwara was purchased on the 25th June 1999 after obtaining the permission and blessings of Baba Gurdev Singh Jee to build a Nanaksar Gurdwara in Southall. The land itself was a derelict engineering factory that had been in decline for many years. The property had not even been on the market, when some Sewadars spotted it and made an approach to the owner, who eventually, with Baba Jee’s blessings decided to sell the land, so that the current Gurdwara could be built. The land is approximately one acre. Once plans had been finalized and passed by the local building planning authority, construction began and the foundation ceremony was performed in October 1999.

Ragiis (Monks) from India were sent by Poojniya Baba Jee, so that the daily Kirtan which forms the cornerstone of the Nanaksar regime could begin. It was Baba Jee’s wish that the Kirtan should start as soon as possible even though the construction had not been completed. Kirtan started in the annex hall in November 2000, and the opening ceremony of the main hall was done on the 3rd February 2001. Baba Gurdev Singh Jee and dignitaries from other Nanaksar Gurdwaras were in attendance.

The main function that is celebrated here is Masya every month. This is as per the directions of Baba Jee so it would not conflict with the Pooranmashi celebrations that take place at the Birmingham Gurdwara, thereby enabling Sangat to attend both functions in Gurdwaras.

I was staying near it last month , so gone here many times :) !

The The Birmingham Nanaksar Gurdwara was in the past an old Methodist church. It was converted to its present state back in 1981 and a much needed extension was done in 1991 due to a huge increase in Sangat. Even today, on Pooranmashi & other special occasions the main prayer hall gets completely full. There are plans to extend the langar hall to accommodate the ever increasing Sangat.

This was the first Gurdwara that Baba Gurdev Singh Jee built outside of India and since then seven more have been built. The main priority Baba Jee has when building a Gurdwara is to start the Nitnem of ‘Kirtan’ in the morning and evening, then comes the construction work. Pooranmashi is the main function celebrated at this Gurdwara every month in the evening. Sangat from all over UK come to participate in the celebration and attend the Bhog of Sri Sampat Akhand Path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee followed by Katha and Kirtan.

A Church building at 130 High Street in Smethwick was purchased. With the god’s blessings we had a Gurdwara where it became possible for the Sikh Communities from Birmingham and the neighbouring towns to be able congregate under one roof and worship the name of God. The purchase price for the premises was £11,600 and the Gurdwara Udghatan took place on 31st July 1961. The present Gurdwara premises is still at the old church site but rebuilt recently to gleam majestically.

Central Sikh Temple (Wadda Gurdwara)

No.2 Towner Road, Singapore 327804
Tel: 6299 3855
In 1912, with the assistance of a Sindhi merchant named Wassiamull, a group of Sikhs bought a bungalow with a large compound at 175 Queen Street and turned it into a gurdwara. The gurdwara became known as the Central Sikh Temple when other temples were established. It was also known as the Wadda Gurdwara ('The Big Temple').
The temple was reconstructed in 1921. The congregation hall was on the first floor and the kitchen and other facilities on the ground floor. It is the custom for Sikh temples to provide food and lodging to travellers.
Plans for a new temple in Towner Road were conceived in 1983. Its construction began in 1984 and was completed in April 1986. The Central Sikh Temple at Towner Road was officially opened in November that year.

MRT: Aljunied

The Diwan was founded Sikhs originating from the Doaba region of the Punjab. Doaba, the land in the Punjab between the two rivers, the Sutlej and Bias. Sometime in 1927, about fifty of these Sikhs from Doaba got together and banded themselves into an association. Their financial position did not enable them to purchase a premises for the Gurdwara. So they rented a premises which they used as their 'club-house' were they could meet and gather from time to time. As years went by, the membership increased.
On the 11th of May 1934, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib was installed into their club-house which at that time was a rented premises at 63 Queens Street. From then on, gurdwara shifted to Terrace.near Newton and then to along Norfolk Road for various reasons. However, in 1991, the temple bought one and half floors (3 units) of a seven storey building which houses associations at Lorong 29, Geylang Road for about S$1.2 million. The new temple premises boasts a large prayer hall.
