Microsoft has finally made official its answer to Apple’s multitouch Magic Mouse: the Microsoft Touch Mouse for Windows 7. I was prepared to scoff, given how execrable multitouch support in Windows 7 is in the first place, but you know what? As an Apple user, I want one, because this was actually designed with ergonomics in mind, unlike the Magic Mouse.
The touch support is a lot more capable in the Touch Mouse than you’d think Windows 7 would be capable of, and it’s all because of the care that Microsoft has put in. The gesture list includes one finger scrolling, thumb-swiping to emulate the back and forward buttons, two finger Aero Snap and three fingers to trigger an Expose-like view, which is new to the Intellimouse software the Touch Mouse is using.
It looks like a great mouse, but unfortunately, it’s only for Windows 7. Worse, it’ll be expensive when it’s released: $80 MSRP. Even then, you’re going to have to wait a while for the Touch Mouse for Windows 7 to hit your local big box, since it’s not due out until June. Given how spotty the current multitouch experience on Windows 7 is, though, you might have no choice but to wait.a
