The role of a lifetime

Now, this could be the mother of all remakes. Agneepath, the movie that gave us the seething Vijay Dinanath Chauhan immortalized by a rasping and wheezing Amitabh Bachchan, is being remade. In fact, not just being remade, the film is getting a fresh makeover altogether.

Karan Johar, whose late dad produced the original movie directed by Mukul Anand, has given his go-ahead to the remake which will be directed by his assistant Karan Malhotra.

It is Malhotra who, along with two more writers, has re-written the film and adapted it to contemporary times. The remake won’t be an exact copy but will have many changes. For instance, the lovable character of the south Indian coconut seller Krishnan Aiyer MA, played by Mithun Chakraborty, has been axed in the remake.

Rumour is abuzz that Hrithik Roshan has been finalized to play the leading role, but Johar isn’t yet confirming any names. He says he is yet to approach any actor for the film. But is Hrithik on his wishlist? Johar prefers to keep mum for now.
