21 Nigerian students sent to Ludhiana jail
Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, June 16
To avoid any clash with their
opponents lodged in the
Kapurthala modern jail located at
Theh Kanjla, the Jalandhar City
Commissionerate Police has
lodged all 21 Nigerian students,
studying at Lovely Professional
University (LPU), in a Ludhiana
jail.
The city police took all 21 accused
LPU students to the Ludhiana jail
for lodging them there after they
were remanded to judicial custody
of 14 days by the court of Duty
Magistrate ACJM Mandeep Kaur
on Sunday.
The Nigerian students were held
on Saturday for indulging in
rioting and theft. A first
information report (FIR) under
various Sections 382 (theft), 160
(committing affray), 148 (rioting,
armed with deadly weapons), 149
(every member of unlawful
assembly guilty of offence
committed in prosecution of
common object) and 323
(voluntarily causing hurt) of the
IPC was registered against them
at the police station No. 7.
Meanwhile, the commissionerate
police informed the Nigerian
embassy about the arrest of its 21
nationals through an e-mail, the
sources said, adding that a copy
of the FIR was also provided to
LPU officials.
The LPU also started the process
of gathering entire information and
facts about the issue. The LPU is
reportedly going to conduct a
parallel inquiry into the matter.
Some of the arrested foreign
students were identified as Julien,
Chris, Jado Masiya, John Mayi,
Stephen Kisa, Plydor Kazadi
Kalbal, Spagar, Quatre,
Mbalanganza, Mbata Siala,
Juniore, Francis Cabrel, Luboya
Saba, Mutumbo, Rom Mutombo,
Papy Limboma, Bob Mubembe,
Ebolo Edobijo, Max, Nzanzu
Peghuy Wb and Masteb Paulin.
The students were caught for
allegedly snatching the purse of a
man on Garha Road and later a
camera from a photojournalist on
Saturday. They also reportedly
snatched a camera from a
cameraman from a vernacular
daily who had come to cover the
spot at the bus-stand police post.
Even when the students were
shifted to the Division Number 7
police station, the students
indulged in arguments with the
police and even tried to overpower
them.
A drama was witnessed at the
police station as the report of the
incident spread and more
photojournalists turned up. The
students resisted their pictures
being clicked during the course of
which heated arguments took
place.
