Mumbai: Shiv Sena's executive president Uddhav Thackeray wants the Maharashtra government to replace the name Bombay in all the old state laws in the same way as Gujarat has done on the completion of its golden jubilee celebrations.
Maharashtra, too, held its concluding celebrations yesterday to observe 50 years of its existence but Thackeray feels the state has done little to replace the word Bombay which continues to be used in many old laws.
"If Gujarat can do it, why can't Maharashtra act quickly rather than retain the word Bombay in many of the legislations," he said.
He added: "For this, the Maharashtra government should immediately promulgate an ordinance to implement this decision and come out with a formal bill during the forthcoming monsoon session of the state legislature."
Special bill
The Gujarat Assembly on March 28 passed a special bill to replace Bombay with Gujarat in all the Acts.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that the new nomenclature will come into force from Sunday.
The Gujarat Governor, Kamla Beniwal, gave the approval to the amendment and it has been notified as The Gujarat Short Titles (Amendment) Act, 2011 in the extraordinary Gazette of Gujarat government.
The Bombay Land Revenue Code 1879 will now be known as Gujarat Land Revenue Code 1879.
There are 67 acts and laws in Gujarat which carry the name of Bombay that will be replaced by Gujarat.
Maharashtra has far more laws referring to Bombay. The acts and laws were prevalent in the former undivided Bombay state.
When Gujarat was carved out on May 1, 1960, the two became independent entities. During British times, the Bombay Presidency included present-day Gujarat, Maharashtra as well as parts of Karnataka and even Pakistan's Sindh province and the British territory of Aden in Yemen.
