Despite being one of the largest film-producing nations with an output of over 1,000 movies every year, India has not made it to the shortlist of the Cannes Film Festival which starts on May 11.

A total of 49 films have been selected from 33 countries at the 11-day festival, in its 64th edition, which will be opened by Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris, according to a statement on the festival's website.

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai, a regular on the Cannes red carpet since 2002, will represent India this time as well.

Last year Indian director Vikramaditya Motwane's Udaan was screened at the festival in the Un Certain Regard section and became the first film to represent India in the Cannes official section in the last seven years.
