Abu Dhabi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised to make Delhi streets safer like the UAE with the help of security cameras, if voted to power again.

The national convener of Aam Admi Party (AAP) who is readying to fight assembly elections in Delhi early next year, promised to install one million WiFi security cameras across Delhi to make the streets safer, especially for women. “[While driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi] A friend showed me security cameras installed on lampposts on the streets [which ensure security],” he said while addressing an audience of Indian professionals in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

His party’s promised free WiFi service across the city along with installation of one million WiFi cameras to cost Rs3 billion [around Dh180 million]. “This will ensure women’s safety,” Kejriwal said.

When he was chief minister, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court had told him all criminal cases of atrocities against women could be disposed of within six months if more courts were established. His government had initiated moves to that effect, but it was stalled when he resigned after 49 days in power. Similarly all criminal cases could be disposed of in six months, but senior politicians involved in criminal cases did not want to change the system, he alleged.

About AAP’s promised educational loan to college students with state government’s guarantee for repayment, he said even if 25 per cent students default on repayment, it would cost the state exchequer Rs25 billion only. This is not a loss but an investment on people. Not only the poor, but the children of the rich who want to be self-reliant can also use this loan, he said. The promised 20 new colleges to be established in Delhi in the next five years will help train entrepreneurs who will be employers, instead of job seekers.

Praising the visionary leadership of the UAE for the country’s development, he said Non-Resident Indians’ support and blessings were valuable in the fight against corruption in India.

Reacting to a criticism that the activist in him did not transform into an administrator, he said it was wrong to compartmentalise such aspects. When someone finds an injustice, it is important to fight it. It is immaterial whether you do it with an activist’s perspective or that of an administrator.

Giving several examples during his chief ministership, Kejriwal said corruption and inflation are interlinked. If corruption is checked, prices of goods and services can be brought down.

Indian expatriates in Abu Dhabi, especially women and children, made a beeline to take photographs with Kejriwal at the event.
