Harcharan Singh, 19, made history as the first Sikh to become an officer in the Pakistan army. Though minorities can sit for all examinations, including for the army, no Hindus or Sikhs had ever been selected for the armed services. Singh, who was preparing to study architecture, said that now that he has opened the doors, he wants his younger brother to follow him into the army and show that Sikhs and other minorities can join Pakistan’s most prestigious institutions.
