Hyderabad, Feb 6 (PTI) Two persons were arrested here for "illegally" implanting counterfeit International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) numbers in Chinese-made mobile phone handsets, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, a police team yesterday arrested Naveen Singh and Syed Mohsin Ahmed at Jagdish Market area here for illegally cloning Chinese handsets, Task Force DCP V B Kamalasan Reddy said.
"The duo were charging Rs 300 per handset for implanting counterfeit IMEI number in Chinese handsets," he said. Rebuilding, changing or tampering IMEI number make it difficult to tracking a cell phone.
IMEI number is unique to every instrument, which is given by the manufacturer of the instrument and allow calls to be traced through electronic surveillance, Reddy said. The Centre on December last year had banned import of Chinese mobile phone handsets that lack unique IMEI identification number.
