Nottinghamshire vs Durham

Brendan Taylor and Samit Patel's rescue act turned the game in Nottinghamshire's favour as they finished with a commanding 353 for 6 at stumps on day one against Durham at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. They joined forces when the home side was reeling at 93 for 4 and put on 168 for the fifth wicket with Taylor scoring a ton in quick time. He was dismissed for 114 after Patel was sent back for 84. Riki Wessels and Brett Hutton were then involved in an unbeaten half-century stand to take their side past the 350 mark on the opening day.

Brief scores: Nottinghamshire 353 for 6 (Brendan Taylor 114, Samit Patel 84; James Weighell 2-55) vs Durham

Somerset v Surrey

Losing wickets at regular intervals put the brakes on Surrey's progress as Somerset bagged the honours on Day 1 of the County Championship Division match at the County Ground in Taunton. Opting to bat, the visitors could not string together any substantial partnership, barring a couple of half-century stands, as they were reduced to 236 for eight at the end of the day's play. Kumar Sangakkara and Steve Davies came up with fighting knocks, but Somerset chipped away at regular intervals to put themselves in a position of strength. Jack Leach, the left-arm orthodox spinner, was the pick of the bowlers as he finished the day with a four-wicket haul.

Brief scores: Surrey 236 for 8 (Steve Davies 49, Kumar Sangakkara 45; Jack 4-31, Jim Allenby 2-38) vs Somerset

Division 2

Northamptonshire vs Essex

Ben Duckett's stunning eighth first-class ton saw Northamptonshire dominate the first day's play against Essex at the County Ground in Northampton. Duckett, who had scored an unbeaten 282 early on in the season, made 189 off just 255 deliveries before becoming Ravi Bopara's second victim. The Essex all-rounder went on to pick two more wickets but the day still belonged to Duckett. He first put on 167 for the first wicket with Rob Newton, who made 75 and then added 112 for the second wicket. Josh Cobb remained unbeaten on 49 at the close of play as the hosts ended up with 376 for 5.

Brief scores: Northamptonshire 376 for 5 (Ben Duckett 189, Rob Newton 75, Ravi Bopara 4-64) vs Essex

Sussex vs Derbyshire

Sussex seamers ran riot on the opening day against Derbyshire at the County Ground in Hove to reduce the visitors to 142 for 9 at the close of play. Derbyshire were off to a horror start as they lost Chesney Hughes in the first over for a duck. This started a procession of wickets from which they never recovered and were placed at 97 for 7 when Shiv Thakor, who has been in great form this season, struck an unbeaten 44 off 44 balls with four fours and two sixes. They lost two more wickets in the end. Steve Magoffin, Stu Whittingham and Ajmal Shahzad picked up three wickets each.

Brief scores: Derbyshire 142 for 9 (Shiv Thakor 44*, Steve Magoffin 3-22, Ajmal Shahzad 3-27) vs Sussex
