The Congress today raised the pitch by attacking the Narendra Modi government for gradually creating an atmosphere in the country to silence the voices of debate and dissent and promising to raise issue of concern in cooperation with other like-minded parties.
Seeing it as a plan to divert attention from its failures on various fronts, the party put the onus on the government in ensuring Parliament functions normally. The three-month Budget session starts tomorrow.
Setting the tone at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, party chief Sonia Gandhi criticised the government, saying: “The ruling establishment appears determined to undermine all democratic norms. It seems hell-bent to destroy the spirit of inquiry, questioning, debate and dissent.”
She said the Congress wanted Parliament to function but the government was unwilling to accept the democratic right of the Opposition to raise public issues.
The belligerent approach found reflection in the CWC statement that said: “The Congress will raise all issues when Parliament begins on Tuesday. Parliament’s duty is to debate and legislate... But the responsibility for creating an atmosphere conducive to its functioning is that of the government.”
