7 Indians in main draws of India open

It proved to be a good start for the hosts on the first day of the India Open Super Series 2011 as seven of the Indians cruise into the main draws at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here.

In the women’s single, Sayali Gokhale, Trupti Murgunde, Sindhu Pusarla Venkata of India and Poon Lok Yan of Hongkong qualified for the main draws. In the men’s qualification, all the four Indian Youngsters- Prannoy HS, Sai Praneeth, Anup Sridhar and Sourabh Verma made it to the final draw.

Sayali Gokhale, seeded first in the qualification round, started on a shaky note against Tanvi Lad but finally manage to defeat her with a score of 20-22, 21-19, 21-15 in the first round. She made a strong comeback in the second round to defeat Mudra Dahinje quite convincingly with a score of 21-12, 21-10. Dahinje on the other hand made it to the second round of the qualification beating Mohita Sahdev 21-14, 21-16. Sayali would next face Jiayuan Chen of Singapore in the first round of the mains Women’s Single.
In women’s qualification round third seed Trupti Murgunde defeated Dhanya Nair 21-18, 21-5 to progress to the second round where she faced Anita Ohlan who overcame Sanyogita Ghorpade in a straight set with a score line of 21-9, 21-14. In their second round clash, Trupti emerged the winner defeating Anita 21-15, 21-14. Murgunde will next face Aprilla Yushwandari of Indonesia. The third Indian Woman who made it to the final round was Sindhu Pusarla Venkata who set up a clash with the 8th seed of the tournament S Ponsana of Thailand in the mains first round.

Sindhu in the first round defeated compatriot PC Thulasi, who went down fighting 21-18, 21-15. In the second round clash Neha Pandit, who defeated the 2nd seed Monika Fasungova of Slovakia earlier, showed little resilience and went down 21-13, 21-18. Poon Lok Yan of Hongkong was the fourth women to make it to the main draws by defeating Saili Rane quite convincingly 21-8, 21-10 in the first round before defeating Arundhati Pantawane in the second round with a score-line reading 21-17, 14-21, 21-13.

Arundhati in the first round defeated the 4th seed Tse Ying Suet of Thailand in a hard fought match with a score of 21-19, 14-21, and 22-20. Poon Lok Yan will next face P Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand in the mains first round. In Mens’s qualification round, the much fancied and No 1 seed Aditya Elango went down in the first round itself losing to Oscar Bansal 21-16, 21-17. Prannoy HS was the other qualifier who made it to the second round defeating Guaranshu Chopra 21-7, 21-14.

In the second round clash, Oscar Bansal put up a fight in the first set but went down with little fight in the second set against the eventual qualifier H S Prannoy 21-16, 21-11. Prannoy in the first round of the mains draw will face Shon Wan Ho of Korea. Sai Praneeth, touted as the next big thing in Indian Badminton qualified for the mains draw beating Manish Gupta 21-5, 21-7 in the first round and then defeating the fourth seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-19, 21-19 in the second round to set up a mains first round clash with Wong wing Ki of Hongkong.

Suppanyu Avihingsanon made it to the second round defeating Tanveer Gill 21-12, 21-12. For the third qualifier place in the Men’s Single, third seed Anup Shridhar overcame Vikram Saini 21-14, 21-8 in the first round and defeated K Nandagopal 21-14, 25-23 in the second round, Nandagopal made it to the second round after defeating Rohan Castelino 14-21, 21-13, 21-15. In the next round Anup has the tough task of facing one of the title contenders of the tournament Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia who is seeded No 2.

Sourabh Verma was the last of the Indian guys to make it to the final round defeating Nigel Dsa 21-15, 21-17 before overcoming the No 2 seed Chung Seang Tan of Malaysia 21-12, 20-22, 21-12 in the second round. The Malaysian on his way to the second round defeated Nagendra T by 21-9, 21-11. Sourabh Verma will next face Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro.
