Sania Mirza’s poor record at Grand Slams extended when she crashed out of the singles event of the Wimbledon championships with a first round defeat at the hands of Germany’s world number 55 Angelique Kerber.

The unseeded Indian lost her opening round 4-6 1-6 to her German rival, who set up a second round meeting with Israel’s 13th seed Shahar Peer.

Sania made a bright start by breaking Kerber in the first game of the match but was broken twice to surrender the first set. She was then outplayed in the second set, last night.

It is now sixth time in 17 Grand Slam appearances that Sania has failed to cross the first round hurdle.

Sania will now look to put up a better show in the women’s doubles event for which she has teamed up with Caroline Wozniacki.

Sania is not competing in the mixed doubles event. With Sania’s defeat India's singles challenge has also ended in the grass court Grand Slam as neither Somdev Devvarman nor Prakash Amritraj could make the men’s singles main draw. — PTI
