Phagwara August 17:
Temptation to collect coins and small-denomination currency notes being thrown by people passing over the bridge across the Chitti Bein cost a youth his life as he lost control and slipped into the high-current water of the river.
Phagwara DSP HPS Khakh said four youths were collecting the coins and small currency notes. When one person threw a Rs 10 note, it fell towards the flowing water and Gopal alias Gopi (17) of nearby Paragpur village, while trying to pick it up, was caught in the current of the river and could not return.
His three friends then raised an alarm and other persons present there informed the police. However, by then, the youth had drowned. The DSP said they then summoned divers from the PAP to locate him.
The search which lasted over a few hours continued into the night, and his body was found entangled in the bushes along the stream. Khakh revealed that when he questioned his three friends, they revealed they were collecting money. The samadhi of a peer is located under the bridge by the river, and many devotees crossing the bridge, offer some money from the bridge.
