ABC And Marvel Eying ‘Avengers’ - Themed TV Series

After scoring huge at the box office with its Avengers movie, Marvel is looking to explore the mythology on the small screen too. I’ve learned that Marvel’s TV division is in conversation with ABC and ABC Studios about doing a drama series in the Avengers world. I hear that the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel, but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster. I hear the project is in a nascent stage, described as “a kernel of an idea,” with a number of scenarios being explored, including a high-concept cop show. Marvel has already given the Avengers the animated treatment with Disney XD’s The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the upcoming Avengers Assemble.

Establishing a primetime foothold has been a priority for Disney-owned Marvel. The company has developed several projects for ABC Studios over the last couple of years, one of which, a Hulk series, is still in the works. Search is under way for a new writer to pen the project.

AMC picks up Area 51

If you are thinking that Armageddon can’t come fast enough now that AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men” are nearing their ends, put away the survival gear.

There is something to live for, after all.

AMC just closed a deal this week to begin creating a new scripted series, “Area 51,” based on the best-selling book of the same title by Annie Jacobsen, The Post has learned.

Already aboard the “Area 51” spacecraft project are Gale Anne Hurd (“The Walking Dead”) as executive producer, Todd E. Kessler (“The Unit,” “The Good Wife,” “Rome),” as writer and Jacobsen as a co-producer.

In case you don’t know what Area 51 is, then clearly you haven’t been abducted by aliens (the space kind, not the border-crossing kind) since that crash in Roswell, NM, 65 years ago.

Area 51 is a remote, secretive, high-security portion of Edwards Air Force Base in Nevada — where, rumor has it, the military keeps living and/or dead alien creatures, as well as pieces of a flying saucer recovered from a crash site in nearby Roswell in 1947.

Government officials maintain (wink, wink) that Area 51 is merely a testing site where experimental aircraft and weapons systems are developed.

Yesterday Joel Stillerman, head of original programming at AMC, said he thinks that the “Area 51” series will adhere more closely to Jacobsen’s non-fiction book than sci-fi. That means less “ET” and more CIA.

“Gale brought us the book and loved the way it presented an oral history of the place. She has this whole technology/futuristic thing going on.”

The 1950s/’60’s-era series will focus on the workers in Area 51 who protect America’s deepest, darkest secrets — including the remains of the “alien” crash at Roswell — and how they become infected with Cold War paranoia.

I’m thinking military Don Draper.

Jacobsen maintains in her book that the aliens found at the Roswell crash site weren’t from another planet but were the horrible results of American experiments on human beings .

She believes the crash signalled not an alien invasion but the start of the Cold War.

Pilots are already being shot for "Low Winter Sun,” a murder mystery involving cops and criminals, starring James Ransone and Mark Strong (who starred in the UK version), and an as-yet-untitled legal thriller about morals, ethics, politicians and lawyers. Talk about oxymorons all in a row.

Can these shows ever replace “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad?”

The evil geniuses at AMC were clever enough to scoop up “Mad Men” after HBO turned it down, “Breaking Bad” after FX rejected it, and “ The Walking Dead” after NBC nixed it. Believe it.

The CW Eyeing TV Series Adaptation of BATTLE ROYALE

Though The CW’s Hunger Games-esque pilot The Selection didn’t move forward this year (they put the show back into development), the network is now eyeing a different series that centers on kids murdering kids. Specifically, The CW is apparently mulling over adapting the 2000 Japanese hit Battle Royale for the small screen. When Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games book trilogy hit shelves, it drew quite a few comparisons to Battle Royale given that both properties revolve around teenagers living in an authoritarian state, fighting for survival in a government-sanctioned “murder everyone” competition.

The similarities really stop there, as The Hunger Games and Battle Royale have strikingly different tones and characters. That said, Hunger Games is—to borrow a phrase from Mugatu—“so hot right now,” so a similarly plotted television series looks pretty attractive from a financial standpoint. Hit the jump for more.

A U.S. feature film remake of Battle Royale, itself an adaptation of a Koushun Takami novel of the same name, has been stalled in development for years. Per the LA Times, The CW has been in talks with the project’s representatives about turning it into an English-language television series. No deal is in place, and according to Japanese law, Takami apparently must approve any remake of the property before it moves forward.

That said, a television iteration of the story would likely flourish on The CW. Whether you watch their programming or not, the network has done an excellent job of branding what they stand for. While they have shows that vary wildly in genre, each series distinctly has that “CW” feel to it. Moreover, the network is home to the genre juggernaut The Vampire Diaries and hopes to strike superhero gold this fall with Arrow, so a totalitarian series about fight-to-the-death competitions could fit right in.

It remains to be seen if The CW version of Battle Royale will ever come to fruition, and it’s definitely early days, but I’d actually be interested to see how the cable channel would handle some of the touchier subject matter and violence. A better version would likely be found on HBO, but the network television landscape has changed wildly over the past decade with cable shows like Nip/Tuck and The Walking Dead pushing the boundaries of what you can and can’t show on all-access TV. Hopefully we hear more soon, but sound off in the comments with your thoughts on this American iteration of Battle Royale.

Rush Hour 4 is in the Works

It's been five years since Rush Hour 3 last brought together Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker's Lee and Carter, but CraveOnline has learned that another adventure is in the works. They caught up with producer Arthur Sarkissian who says that the sequel is moving forward with the involvement of both stars and that a screenwriter will be brought aboard very soon.

"I'm trying to do it closer to how I did Rush Hour 1," he told the outlet. "More down to earth. More gritty. Introduce two new characters and make it real the way the first one was. I personally was not happy with the third one. I thought 1 and 2 were very good. I think 3 got out of hand a little bit. It's not a matter of just bringing them back to do another segment of that or a sequel to it by putting them in another city and having them bicker. I don't want that. I want something new."

The First Class Sequel is Officially X-Men: Days of Future Past

Rumored earlier, the sequel to 2011's X-Men: First Class is officially titled X-Men: Days of Future Past. IGN scored a confirmation directly from the film's producer, Bryan Singer.

"It's called 'Days of Future Past'," he told the site. "It deals with aspects of that comic, but also some very new things."

The comic book storyline, "Days of Future Past" ran in "Uncanny X-Men" #141 and 142 way back in 1981 during Chris Claremont and John Byrne's run and introduced the idea of an alternate future for Marvel's mutants that grew out of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants killing an important senator, leading to a future where all mutants are hunted by Sentinels.

Batman reboot slated for 2016?

Previously, news came out about the Justice League Movie being written by Will Beall, and we were informed that the upcoming Man of Steel movie would be spearheading a new DC shared universe.

With The Dark Knight Rises being the last of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, Warner Bros. is obviously looking to reboot the Batman franchise.

I'm told that a new Batman movie might be slated for 2016 following the Justice League Movie, and it will not be an origin story (like Amazing Spider-Man), but will feature a Batman who is entering his second year as a hero.

The film may also be called "The Batman," though I can't be sure on that as the 2004 animated series was of the same title which featured a Batman in his third year.

Also, this new Batman will be part of the same shared DC Universe that features the Justice League Movie as well as having Henry Cavill in the role of Superman in Justice League and subsequent sequels to the Man of Steel.

The info comes from our source who has previously provided us information about the Green Lantern movie, The Dark Knight Rises and the Man of Steel.

Firestorm Coming to The CW's Arrow?

With China White, Deathstroke and Deadshot already confirmed for the new CW show Arrow, it looks like Oliver Queen will have his hands full, maybe to the point that he needs help? We've gotten word from Kabookit that Emily Bett Rickards has been cast in the show as Felicity Smoak. That name might not mean anything to some of you, but keen observers will realize that this is the stepmother of one half of the hero Firestorm, Ronald Raymond.

Kristen Stewart Dropped from 'Snow White' Sequel Plans

Universal has decided to shelf its planned Snow White and the Huntsman sequel and is instead focusing on a solo Huntsman movie starring Chris Hemsworth. Kristen Stewart will not be invited to return if the follow-up goes forward.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the sequel to June's Snow White, which starred Stewart, Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, is being reconceived as a spinoff movie. It's unclear whether director Rupert Sanders will return, though one source with ties to the production says he will.

Fox to lose Daredevil rights, returns to Marvel

With its extention request rejected, 20th Century Fox will have no choice but to allow the rights to "Daredevil" to go back to Marvel, marking the second major character to revert back to the superhero shingle since Disney bought it in 2009.

Under the current terms of the agreement, Fox has to put the pic into production by Oct. 10. But late Monday night, Joe Carnahan, Fox's pick to direct the film, implied that the actioner wasn't happening at the studio.

"Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids," Carnahan tweeted, followed by "We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone's side."

Marvel will regain control of the character sometime after the October deadline passes, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The Punisher, which had been at Lionsgate, marked the first character to revert to Marvel since its sale to Disney, which cannot exploit characters like Spider-Man, Venom, Ghost Rider, the X-Men, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, Elektra and Deadpool. Rights-holding studios that can prove films are in active development retain those rights in perpetuity.

Marvel began fully financing its own slate of projects in 2005, beginning with "The Incredible Hulk" and "Iron Man." Before that, Marvel licensed its characters out to other studios, with vampire hunter Blade the first to get the bigscreen treatment by New Line in 1998.
