Women can change face of rural economy: CM

Chief Minister Harish Rawat today exhorted women to take the lead in changing the face of the rural economy of the state. He was speaking during a programme — “Women self-help groups (SHGs) and bank linkage” — organised by the State Bank of India at Dunga House here.
He expressed his gratitude to the SBI for providing loan to SHGs. The Chief Minister said this would motivate other banks as well.
He expressed hope that the SBI would organise such programme in Hardwani, Srinagar and Haridwar also. Rawat said other government and private institutions should also come forward and help SHGs.
He said suitable markets would be created for SHGs in Dehradun, Haldwani, Rudrapur and Haridwar. Government departments had been directed to buy products made by these groups. An e-portal would also created to register the groups. He announced to give Rs 5,000 each from the CM’s discretionary fund to each SHGs, which participated in the programme today.
The Chief Ministers said stopovers would be created on national highways where local dishes would be served. Local handicraft items would also be made available.
A provision of 50 per cent reservation for women in van panchayats was being made.
The Chief Minister said 1,000 women were being appointed in the police department. A woman sub- inspector would be appointed in every police station.
Earlier, he presentedcheques to 101 SHGs on behalf of the SBI. Principal Secretary Radha Raturi, Additional Secretary Sridhar Babu Addanki, CGM, SBI, Pallav Mahapatra, CP Mohan and other officials were present.
