The Central Government and the BJP have condemned the “Tanzanian woman assault case” in Congress-ruled Karnataka, terming it a “deeply painful” incident.
Condemning the incident, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said: “We condemn this incident unequivocally. Stringent punishment will be given to the perpetrators. We have assured our African friends that necessary legal action will be taken. We will take steps to ensure the safety of African students in India.”
On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted: “We are deeply pained over the shameful incident. I spoke to the Chief Minister of Karnataka. He informed me that a criminal case has been registered and four accused have been arrested.”
Meanwhile, the BJP questioned Congress’ muted response on the incident.
“It is a shameful incident and the BJP condemns it. The incident happened right under the nose of his Congress government there,” a BJP leader said. Recalling the Opposition furore over the death of Hyderabad scholar Rohith Vemulla, Sharma said: “It is shameful that those who are experts in doing politics over the dead are mum over such an unfortunate incident.
“The BJP condemns the incident but it is high time the Congress and company did some introspection. Where are Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Nitish Kumar, Asaduddin Owaisi, Arvind Kejriwal? Are they silent because this incident happened in a Congress-ruled state,” he asked.
