Water reservoirs stay at last week's levels

Water level in India's main reservoirs in the week to June 24 remained at the previous week's level of 12 percent but it was 3 percent higher than a year ago, government data showed.

Water levels in 81 main reservoirs did not rise as the monsoon rains, vital to the trillion-dollar economy, were 21 percent below normal in the week to June 23.

More water in reservoirs will boost supply of hydropower, which accounts for a quarter of India's total generation capacity, and help irrigate crops even after the monsoon season.
