NEW DELHI: A 16-year-old student of a convent school near Sainik Enclave in Najafgarh has alleged that his eardrum was damaged after his teacher slapped him for arriving a few minutes late.
Avijeet Kumar Singh, a student of Class X, has claimed that his English teacher slapped him and pulled his hair when he arrived a little late for special classes on Wednesday. He was allegedly asked to concentrate on his studies when he complained of a sharp pain in his ear. He was taken to a doctor only after he reached home.
The boy's family lodged a police complaint in the evening. And according to his brother, Avinash Kumar Singh (22), the school authorities were now putting pressure on the family to withdraw the police complaint. The school authorities, however, were not available for comment.
"Avijeet's school starts at 8 am. But on Wednesday, he had special classes at 7.30 am. My brother reached seven minutes late. Chiding him for lack of discipline, the English teacher slapped him hard and pulled his hair. He immediatly complained of severe pain to his teacher, who asked him to shut up and continue studying," said Avinash. Their father, Sanjeev Kumar Singh, is the editor of a local newspaper.
The boy's mother noticed that he was in pain when he returned home around 2.30 pm. "My mother was alone and she panicked. I was out for a job interview and rushed home when I got her call. We took Avijeet to Rao Tula Ram Hospital where the junior doctors said his case was ‘serious'. A senior ENT specialist said there was some damage to his eardrum. He, however, pescribed some medicines and asked us to return a week later. We had an argument with the doctor when we asked him to treat the case seriously," added Avinash.
The family, which stays at CRPF colony in Jharoda Kalan, then went to the police.
"The cops offered to take the boy to DDU hospital on Thursday. But when they did not arrive till late in the afternoon, we again went to the police station. We were told that the boy has to treated at Rao Tula Ram as his initial tests were done there. As my brother is still writhing in pain, we are thinking of taking him to AIIMS on Friday," claimed Avinash.
When contacted, the police said they would lodge an FIR in the case only after a medical report confirmed the injuries.
"He has no external injuries. Therefore, we cannot lodge a complaint unless we receive the medical report from Rao Tula Ram Hospital. We will question the school authorities only after that," said a senior police officer.
