Today, on the anniversary of his hanging, a salute to Kartar Singh Sarabha, a youth who inspired a revolution & a generation of revolutionaries
Why is Kartar Singh Sarabha's Shaheedi so relevant today, for youth in the West?
Just imagine being 18 years old, from a wealthy family in Panjab, sent to USA to study at one of the top Universities. He could have done what every other privileged young man would have done- enjoyed Life!!
But his heart was aching at the thought of his people being oppressed, undermined and looted.
Just put yourself in his shoes,18 years old, new country, USA!.. New friends, cars, bars restaurants and places to explore..
But in his blood, the calling of his baagi ancestors didn’t let him rest. He knew as a Sikh he cannot accept gulaami, he left a most privileged life to go back to Panjab and inspire a revolution.
He was hung by the british and attained Shaheedi on 16th November 1915.
There’s one lingering question to ask.. We are in the West (as was Bhai Kartar Singh). Panjab is still under the same social, religious and economic slavery as we were under the British, if not worse.
Are we going to continue the revolutionary vision, Ghadar movement of our great ancestors?
