The sudden collapse of a portion of the tunnel has raised a question over the safety measures in place for tunnelling operations.
A number of tunnels have been constructed for hydropower projects. Work is under way at 20 small and big tunnels in the state.
The Larji tunnel hasbeen constructed, 8.8-km Rohtang tunnel is under construction and six tunnels have been proposed for Kiratpur-Nerchowk. Three tunnels will be constructed as part of the Shimla-Parwanoo four-laning project.
Following a pre-feasibility study of Chamnuda-Holi, Tissa-Kilar and Jalori Jot, tunnels at Lift-Himfed Petrol Pump, Lakkar Bazar-Sanjauli (Shimla), Khara-Patthar, Ranital, Swarghat-Bilaspur, Bangana-Dhaneta and Karsehar-Telang have been proposed.
“Standard operating systems are in place and safety guidelines are being issued from time to time, but more steps will be taken in consultation with tunnelling experts of the Border Roads Organisation, power projects, scientists, geologists and other stakeholders,” said Special Secretary, Disaster Management and Revenue, DD Sharma.
