Mumbai: US President Barack Obama kicked off his historic three-day visit to India by saluting the spirit of Mumbai and its people and assuring them that the US wants the perpetrators of the 26/11 terror attacks to be brought to justice. He said Washington and New Delhi have been sharing intelligence to avoid more attacks.

Obama's first visit to India is also his longest to any foreign country since becoming president, a fact he noted at the US-India Business Council, where he announced $10 billion (Dh36.78 billion) in business deals to boost US exports and create 50,000 jobs. He said the partnership between the US and India was indispensable in the 21st century.

The commercial agreements included a $7.7 billion contract for Boeing to supply 30 of its 737 aircraft to India's Spice Airlines.

Obama also said he would relax technology export restrictions imposed after India's nuclear tests back in 1998.

The significance of the US president visiting Mumbai and, in particular, the Taj Hotel, which was one of the targets during the attacks, is seen as a clear message to terrorists that the two countries are working closely in the war against terror. After paying tributes to all those who died and meeting survivors and hotel staff, he said in his speech, "Mumbai is an incredible city, which is a symbol of the energy and optimism of India."

He and his wife Michelle arrived at the Taj in the presidential limousine, having earlier been welcomed at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport by Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Protocol Minister Suresh Shetty and Union Minister Salman Khurshid.

Obama's speech at the Taj has created controversy among some Indians, particularly analysts, who expressed disappointment that the American president did not single out Pakistan as being behind the terror attacks. Some also noted that he did not call the perpetrators "terrorists".

While important business deals are being signed, for ordinary Indians the US president's visit to the Taj marked an emotional high point.
