For beginners a good prime lens to use is Canon / Nikon 50mm f1.8

Aperture value is denoted by f

you can use Aperture priority function on your DSLR ( Av on canon, and A on Nikon camera)

Use the scroller to set it to the lowest value

the scale of f value and the lens opening goes as below
Value (low to max)
f 5.6 -------------------f 22 (just for observation)
Lens opening
( )---------------------- o (from wide open to least )

If you set aperture to lowest value say 5.6 , lens will have full opening ( depends on the range)

if you take a photo focussing on particular object at lower f value, the background will get blurred.

This technique will work for Bokeh effect too.

Example of aperture priority on basic 18-55mm lens

Turning off flash in the day light or against the light is good

in the night I'd use the secondary flash
you can get really good photos if you reflect the flash burst .

you can use either manual or TTL flash to do so.
This weekend am going to take some photos at party will use two cameras
one with flash and one without

Tip#FRAME

Whenever you are going to take a photo, take some time to think .
What do you want to capture?
a landscape , a portrait, an object or moving object etc

you will have to frame it according to the needs

if you take a landscape , don't take 70 % sky and only 30% land, keep it balanced

same for portrait , don't take portrait if the background is more appealing then the subject itself and make sure you look for proper light

if its object, you can use shutter/aperture priority and find out if you need to capture the full or part of it. so framing is the key to a good photo

Tip # Direct flash vs Reflected from roof

If you are going to take a photo at night with the inbuilt flash , that is obvious its going to fall straight onto the subject/object making it leave the shadow in the background that will appear in your photo. This will really look odd.

With the use of flash its not quiet possible to get rid of the shadow that will appear however you can avoid it by using external flash mounting on to your DSLR and directing towards the roof.the reflected light from roof will definitely produce the shadow..but! it will be on the ground that you won't expose.

Tip# Shutter priority

On dslr its denoted by Tv ( for canon )
When you want to take a photo of the moving subject but you want that to stand out from everything else in background n foreground.
This is achieved by holding the camera upright and moving lens while focussinh on moving object.

Night Shot - Long Exposure

Points you want to note down are
1. Camera should be on M manual model
2. Aperture has to be higher value meaning smaller lens opening to let less but full spectrum of light fall on sensor for longer duration.
3. Set shutter to 10 to 30 seconds if light sources are near. If light sources are far you cane set shutter to bulb. You will need remote to use bulb mode to avoid camera shake.
4. You are exposing long enough so you should not be worried about setting iso to any higher then 200. Higher iso can make your photo look grainy.

So settings should be above above and then all you need is set focus on manual or auto focus on light source far away. KEEP your camera on rigid surface before you click and let it expose.

Tip# put your camera on 2 second self timer and leave it alone
