Hyderabad: Senior BJP Leader L.K. Advani's Jan Chetna Yatra has whipped up a storm in the volatile Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.

During his visit to the region, which started on Tuesday and covered the four districts of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Medak before reaching the state capital, Advani repeatedly called for the immediate steps by the Centre towards the formation of a separate Telangana state.

Rejecting the argument of some quarters that it was necessary for the Andhra Pradesh state assembly to pass a resolution for the division of the state, Advani declared that it was neither mandatory nor obligatory under the constitution.

"Under Article 3 of the Constitution, forming a new state is the total responsibility of the parliament," Advani told a news conference in Nizamabad yesterday.

However, Advani's emphatic support for Telangana has left the people in Andhra and Rayalseema regions angry.
