Neighbour held for killing senior citizen in Gurgaon apartment

The 65-year-old woman, found dead at her Sector 55 flat on September 14, was allegedly killed by her next-door neighbour, police said on Thursday. The neighbor has been arrested.
The accused has been identified as Karan (31). Police said Karan confessed to killing Jaya Rani. According to police, he told them that he was under debt and killed the woman to steal money from her house.
Karan, who lived with his family in flat number 109 in Brothers Apartment in Sector 55, worked with his father at a store in Sun City, police said. Jaya Rani lived in flat number 107 on the same floor with her son, daughter-in-law and their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
Karan’s niece and Jaya Rani’s granddaughter study in the same school. Rani’s granddaughter often went to Karan’s house. It was Karan’s mother who first saw Jaya Rani lying in a pool of blood on the afternoon of September 14.
“After killing Jaya Rani, he mingled with her family. He tried hard to behave normal but we got suspicious because of his behaviour. We questioned him on Wednesday and he confessed,” said inspector Amit Kumar, head, crime unit, Sector 46. He was leading the investigation of the case.
According to police, Karan told them that he knew that Jaya Rani was alone at home on the day. He went there to ask for plier. As she gave it to Karan, he used it to hit her. He then strangulated her and took the jewellery that she was wearing, police said.
He then also collected some cash and fled, they said.
Karan stole jewellery and Rs 14-15,000 cash from the house. He told police that he mortgaged the jewellery with a private firm in Kaithal, his home district.
Police said Karan has already been to jail in Kaithal in a case of extortion in 2015.
The woman’s body had 10 injuries made with a sharp-edged weapon, which indicated that she had resisted the attacker.
Based on the family’s complaint, policemen of the Sector 56 station lodged a case of murder (Section 302), robbery (Section 392) and house trespassing (Section 452) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unknown accused.
