I live abroad, and was born abroad. We aren't forgetting our culture, but I think people in Punjab are. I have been there many times from the eighties to just this year. Oh Pehlan vaala Punjab ni reha. Our culture isn't about charkhas and tumbis, it's more than that. But the biggest thing in any culture is the maa boli. The charkha was introduced from Persia so I don't even think of it as part of out culture. And life is a natural progression, why kuth the charkha to make thread when it is mass produced in more efficient ways, why should a jatt use the buldh and hull to cultivate the land when he can get a Ford tractor and do the work more efficiently? Sacrifice efficiency over using out of date machinery to do it the way our ancestors used to do? I think not. That would leave us light years behind the world.

Yeah we have places like Haveli to look at the old ways of the villages. I do miss the kuchiyan kundhan, and everything. But the worst part of the whole thing is that each time I go back, Punjab is in a worse state.

To keep the culture alive, I think everyone in Punjab needs to start thinking about culture, not just the NRI's. Punjab is losing its culture, meaning Punjabi boli faster than we are abroad. The pindu people try to talk Hindi to sound more educated and the shaer walay talk English to sound more educated. No one there wants to speak Punjabi except us NRI's. I'm not kidding, everytime I spoke Punjabi, I would get answered in Hindi or English. Start from ground zero, in Punjab, culture outhay hee ah. Thusee aap de huthee gawa rehay oh.
