The 6th generation iPod nano was announced back in September by Apple. It turned more than a few heads due to the introduction of a touchscreen along with the media player’s smaller size and square shape.
The square shape made the G6 iPod nano look like a watch which has led to a whole ecosystem of accessories to turn it into just that. While the latest iPod nano was an improvement over its predecessor, it still had some drawbacks including an inability for the user to turn it completely off, not just sleep. There was also an inability to control music or radio playback without actually looking at the screen of the device.
The latest firmware update, version 1.1 available through iTunes, addresses these shortcomings. Once updated, the media player can be turned off when a user holds down the device’s sleep/wake button for several seconds. The only time a user will be unable to turn off the device is when it is charging or attached to a power accessory. The nano can be turned back on by simply pressing the sleep/wake button again.
Apple does note some things which will now happen when the device is turned off. These include:
- Music or other audio that’s playing on the device stops.
- Paused radio clears.
- If a slideshow is playing on the device, it stops.
- If a voice memo is being recorded, it stops and saves.
- The pedometer stops.
- Nike + workout data stops and saves.
- When the iPod nano is off, you will not hear or be alerted to any alarm or reminder set on the iPod. When you turn iPod nano back on, alarms or reminders that haven’t yet expired will occur as scheduled.
- If you turn iPod nano back on within five minutes of when it was turned off, it will remember your music playlist and what was playing. However, if you turn iPod nano back on more than five minutes after it was turned off, the device will not remember what you were doing on the device or which application was active.
To use it in this way do the following:
- On the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Tap Music, and then tap the Sleep/Wake Button.
- Tap the On/Off switch.
- Tap either Next Track or Play/Pause.
