The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India 'A' squad for the upcoming tour of Australia. The team will play two four day matches against their Australian counterparts before featuring in a quadrangular tournament also involving the 'A' team of South Africa as well as the High Performance squad of Australia.
Karnataka's victorious treble (Ranji, Vijay Hazare and Irani trophy) during the 2013-14 season was rewarded with the selection of opener, KL Rahul, who was impressive with the bat and finished the season with 1158 runs, second only to Maharashtra's Kedar Jadhav, who finished with 1269 runs. Robin Uthappa has been the flavour of the month. After having been selected for the national team for the 3-match ODI series in Bangladesh, he has been selected in both 'A' squads, and will also lead the team in the quadrangular series. Karun Nair was rewarded for his excellent late-season form for Karnataka, hitting three successive centuries. He impressed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well, often playing with a cool head for Rajasthan Royals.
Manoj Tiwary will lead the squad for the 4-day games while Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha, left out from the India squad for the tour of England, will get another opportunity to impress the selectors. Umesh Yadav, controversially left out of the Test side for the series against England, will lead a largely inexperienced set of pacers. Dhawal Kulkarni, always in the reckoning for higher honours also gets a chance to establish his credentials.
The selectors who rewarded performers in the IPL while selecting the squad for the Bangladesh series kept up with the same theory for the quadrangular series as well. Most of the players selected had key performances for their respective franchises while youth was given preference over experience as the selection of Unmukt Chand and Jaidev Unadkat showed.
