Towards the end of February, a report surfaced stating that the next version of the Symbian^3 operating system would be named Nokia Carla. This follows first generation Symbian Anna and second generation Nokia Belle. The report also details as to when one can expect the rollout of this operating software to current Symbian devices by claiming that the rollout of Nokia Carla will feature on existing devices, such as the Nokia 603, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 by the third quarter of this year. However, if one is eager to get a look at what this upcoming Nokia operating system will look like, GSMArena has managed to get some screenshots of Carla displaying a few of its features.

The report by the mobile dedicated website states that Nokia Carla will feature a new onscreen QWERTY keyboard, alongside an updated Nokia Browser. As for the keyboard, it seems to be inspired by Windows Phone, while the Nokia Browser features some improvements to the user interface. The website notes, “The most noticeable change comes from the lock screen. Gone is the classic Unlock Button, and replacing it is a Swipe to unlock method. The user interface of the Music player also sees some improvements in the form of a refreshed UI, as does the Options screen, which borrows the looks of the Meego Harmattan UI.”

A related report by Nokiapoweruser regarding Nokia Carla states that, “Carla will have major improvements, NFC, Dolby surround; new improved widgets, improved browser (Version 8).” The website also details which handsets will receive this update and when the rollout takes place. They say that the second generation Nokia Belle devices, such as 603,700,701 will start shipping with Carla by the third quarter of 2012. First generation Belle devices, which include handsets, such as N8, C7, E7, X7, E6, C6-01 will receive Nokia Carla as an OS update by early fourth quarter of 2012 and it will release globally as well. The website goes on to state that the update for the first generation Symbian^3 devices will get a lighter version of Nokia Carla and will lack features such as NFC.
