Fatwa against Patanjali products ‘containing cow urine’

The clerics of Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat in Bareilly have issued a fatwa against the use of Patanjali products allegedly containing cow urine. The fatwa was issued in response to a question asked by a local resident, Mohammed Bakhtyar Khan.
In a question submitted on Tuesday, Bakhtyar asked the clerics if the use of Patanjali, allegedly containing cow urine, was permitted in Islam.
“The question was discussed among the clerics and they came to a conclusion that it is anti-Islamic to use such products,” Naseer Quaraishi, media coordinator of Jamat Raza-e-Mustafa, a religious organisation under the dargah, said. “After discussions, Mufti Mohammad Kausar Ali and Mufti Hakim Md Muzaffar Hussain issued the fatwa, a copy of which was sent to Bakhtyar Khan,” he added.
The clerics said that use of every product containing urine of any animal was ‘haraam’ as per Islamic shariya. They added that the rule applied to all such products, “including those manufactured by Patanjali.”
A similar fatwa was issued against Patanjali products by Muslim groups in Tamil Nadu last year, following which a clarification was issued by Patanjali Aurveda managing director Balkrishna. He had claimed that only five out of the total 700 products manufactured by the company had cow urine.​
