Dubai: A court Tuesday dismissed the pleas of two convicted European killers to have their death sentences reduced.

The pair had obtained a waiver from the parents of a salesman they killed in 2001.

The Dubai Court of First Instance Tuesday rejected the special plea made by 31-year-old Russian S.A., and 35-year-old Ukrainian S.N., to have their death sentence reduced to a year in jail.

They had earlier presented Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout a written waiver obtained from the Indian parents of the salesman whom they were convicted of killing in 2001. They also stole Dh5 million worth of diamonds and jewellery from him.

Their lawyer, Abdul Rahman Al Mutawa, handed the court a written request to reduce his clients' death sentence to one year, after the parents dropped their complaint against S.A. and S.N.

Advocate Al Mutawa mentioned in the written request, which was obtained by Gulf News, that the family of the salesman, A.B., collected the blood money [Dh150,000 — the value of blood money then] and dropped their charges against the killers.

"We forgive S.A. and S.N. and we hold no grudge against them. We pardon them forever. This is to certify that we only collected the blood money amount and nothing else," the written waiver said.

The convicted killers submitted their plea based on article 332 of the Federal Penal Code.
