Cyclone Phyan: Derivation of name

As the western Indian coast brace up to brave cyclone Phyan, people have been wondering what the word means.

The cyclone has been named by Myanmar and the Burmese word Phyan that means a cherry which has fallen off a tree. It seems, this time it is a vicious fruit from the weather gods.

The world meteorological bodies have already named potential cyclones till the end of this year. Eight north Indian Ocean countries have jointly prepared a list of 64 names for cyclones.

Whenever a cyclone hits any region, the next available name is picked up from the list for easy identification and facilitating rescue operations.

None of the names are repeated. Some of the next few names available for naming cyclones are Ward, Laila and Bandu.

The nomenclature trend started in Australia when the cyclones were actually named after corrupt politicians in the 19th century.

Cyclone Phyan may not directly hit Mumbai: IMD

'The cyclone may not directly hit Mumbai, but the impact of the severe weather has already started in the city. In the afternoon perhaps, it will be more severe. Disturbed weather is expected with heavy rains, storms and the ea will become very rough," said a Meteorological Department official.

Cyclone Phyan was currently 350 kms away from Mumbai, said IMD officials.
