'Un-Islamic' for Muslim women to work: Deoband
Lucknow, May 12: While India is busy trying to reserve quotas for Muslims in educational as well as professional fields, self-proclaimed leader and protector of Indian Muslims, Darul Uloom Deoband has raised a storm by issuing a fatwa against working Muslim women.
The fatwa proclaimed that it was 'un-Islamic' for Muslim women to work in government or private institutions, where men and women work together and where they have to talk to men without the veil.
The Muslim cleric has not only asked the Muslim women to cover up with a veil while at work he has also forbidden them from talking to their male colleagues.
Besides this, Darul Uloom Deoband has decreed that it is 'haram' (sin) according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman's earnings.
Deoband is India's largest Sunni Muslim seminary.
The controversial fatwa was declared over the weekend. The news of the fatwa gained momentum over the past two days and has invited varied responses.
The fatwa has not only drawn flak from Muslim cleric but also from women. While cleric argue that men and women are entitled to equal rights in Sharia, women have slammed the fatwa as 'retrogade'.
