Who was the first to use the word Hindustan ?

“Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, was the first to use this word. Unfortunately, this fact is little known to scholars and others concerned,” asserts Dr Jodh Singh, famed scholar of philosophy and religion and the editor-in-chief of Encyclopaedia of Sikhism, which is being prepared by Punjab University, Patiala.

“In fact, Guru Nanak Dev was the first holy man to conceptualise our country as Hindustan. And Guru Granth Sahib is the first religious scripture of the Bhakti movement period in which the word Hindustan was used for the first time. Before Guru Granth Sahib, the word Hindustan had not been used in any religious granth,” claims Dr Jodh Singh. “I would stand corrected if any one shows me the reference to Hindustan in any other religious scripture before it was used by Guru Nanak Dev,” adds Dr Jodh Singh.

Guru Nanak Dev wrote the word Hindustan in his shloka that was authored to lodge a protest to God against Babar's reign of terror in Hindustan. The shloka is Khurasan khasmana kiya, Hindustan draya, eti mar pai kurlane, tain ke dard na aiya.” Dr Jodh Singh, who has completed in four volumes the translation of Guru Granth Sahib in Hindi, says Guru Nanak Dev was in fact also the first to visualise the integration of this country which during his period had been divided into several provinces and principalities. All literature was full of references regarding provinces and there was no talk of the country as a unit as such during that period.

wow... this is amazing...

i didnt know all this... now that i have gotten to university, i get to learn so much about history

everything has suddenly started making sense to me...

i learned a lot about the mughal empire, and how babur ruled and founded the empire... so now i understand it fully and have a very clear idea about what ur saying

Its possible that the word is scripted first by guru nanak dev ji, but it originates back when india was attacked by alexender/muslims.

what i know is, this word was first used by alexender's forces, who came to india via indus(called Sindhu) in their language thry cant pronounce the word S, and they call it H. ao they called Sindhu river, as hindhu river, this caused generation of hindu word. All habitants on east of sindhu river were called hindu, this wasnt a word pointing religion, but all people.

Same river gave name india to our nation, english people pronounced Indus (for sindhu) and the name india formed by indus.

i had no clue that Guru Naanak Devji first used the word "Hindustan".
thnx for posting!!

i think, india was first called "hind" and hindustan means "the land hind".
and stan is sanskrit for "place" or "land" ... ?

ur rite. i researched a bit on the net and found that the old persian language 'avestan' and sanskrit have common roots.

many iranian words actually originate from ancient indian languages such as sanskrit or pahalvi.

i.e.:

sthan - stan
saptah - hafta etc.

(like rajasthan) or am i mistaken?:thinking

The word "hindu" originates way back.........Guru ji may have put it into writing first.

And as some1 said word hindu when it originated used to refer to all the inhabitants of the area and not just only the people belonging to "hindu" religion.
