The police resorted to a lathi charge in Jalandhar today when hundreds of computer teachers gheraoed the car of Punjab Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia for not regularising their services, which the BJP had promised before the elections. The teachers raised slogans against the Minister and the Punjab government.
The Minister was here to attend a function at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall when he was gheraoed by the teachers. Though Kalia received a memorandum from the protesters and agreed to their demands partially, he did not announce anything and left the place in a huff.
But the Minister had never imagined that the protesters will follow his vehicle and gherao him again near a petrol pump on the main road. They even laid down in front of his vehicle to press him to fulfill their demands.
To disperse the teachers, the police resorted to a brief lathi charge, in which some teachers received injuries as well. They also blocked traffic at Namdev Chowk and GPO Chowk for over an hour. Some protesters even reached the Minister’s central town residence.
Later, senior police officials, including SSP Arpit Shukla and SP S.K. Kalia, pacified the protesters and a delegation of teachers was allowed to meet Kalia. After his assurance to take up the matter with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, they lifted the dharna.
“The BJP had promised to regularise our services before the elections. But our salaries have not been released for the past four months and when the teachers demanded the salary, they were threatened with termination letters,” said the teachers’ spokesperson Pawan Sharma.
