PUNE

Friendship Day turned bitter for 500 students of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, as police arrested 88 of them for partying late without permission and drinking without permit.

The police produced the students before a magistrate at a makeshift court that later released them on conditional bail.

Those who were not booked by police were let go immediately after medical tests.

The police booked the revellers under various sections of the Bombay Prohibition Act and Bombay Police Act for consuming alcohol without permit and organising a party without permission, which attract jail terms of two to three years.

The party was organised by seniors for juniors from the Khadaki campus here on Sunday evening at a private bungalow on Pune-Solapur Road near Theur, 26 km from here.

Some residents in the neighbourhood called up the police, complaining about loud music and too many vehicles parked indiscriminately, causing traffic jam.

Around midnight, the police raided the place to find some students to be drunk. But the police made it clear that no contraband item was recovered from the students.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ravindrasinh Pardeshi said, “It was not at all a rave party. We have recovered an alcohol stock worth Rs 18,000.
Seven of the 88 booked were party organisers.“

Institute director Vidya Yerwadekar said, “The students sought permission from the hostel authorities for late return.
But they failed to return within the prescribed time limit.
Yerwadekar said the college had ordered an internal inquiry.[/img]

4-member Symbiosis panel to decide action against 350 students

PUNE: Authorities of the city-based Symbiosis Society moved quickly on Monday to constitute a four-member committee including a lady member to decide the action against its students who were at the Sunday night party held at a bungalow in Theur, some 27 km from Pune.

The Pune rural police, acting on complaints of loud music and noisy partying from several residents of the village, raided the party on early Monday.

The society's principal director Vidya Yeravdekar said that 350 of the 489 students present at the party were from its hostels and had exceeded the 12.30 am late-out' deadline granted by the hostel's superintendents.

"The students had taken permission for a late-out' on Sunday. Two late-outs' are granted to them in a month and since it was a Sunday, they were allowed to stay out till 12.30 am," Yeravdekar said.

She said that of the 600 students staying at the Symbiosis hostel at Range Hills, 350 had attended the party. All of them were from the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies. she added.

"When the students did not return till 12.30 am, the hostel director began making calls to them. By the time, the police had reached the venue of the party and alcohol tests were underway. Soon after, some of our authorities reached the spot when the police proceedings were still on. We are extremely disturbed about this incident. It should not have happened," Yeravdekar added.
