Hyderabad: A city court on Wednesday ordered that seven suspects accused of attempting to assassinate Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi be held for 14 days in judicial custody.

Police presented the accused in the court. They included the main suspect Mohammad Bin Omar Yafai also known as Mohammad Pahelwan.

The magistrate remanded them to two weeks' judicial custody. They were later moved to Cherlapally jail.

A group of ten to 11 people attacked Owaisi at Barkas in the Old City on Saturday when he was visiting his Chandrayangutta assembly constituency.

The young leader was stabbed and shot at by the assailants. MIM legislator Ahmad Balala and another person were also injured in the attack.

One assailant was killed and two others were injured when Balala's security guard opened fire to save the lawmakers. Police said it would arrest two other suspects once they are discharged from hospital. They are also on the lookout for between two and four other suspects.

According to police, a land dispute between Owaisi and Pahelwan led to the attack.

Meanwhile, doctors attending to Owaisi said his condition was improving.

According to a medical bulletin by Care Hospital yesterday, Owaisi had been removed from dialysis following an improvement in his kidney functions. All vital organs of the legislator are functioning normally.
