Solar Roadways: Roads may soon generate energy
Harnessing solar energy is good, and it gets a whole lot better when it can be harnessed without creating some sort of exclusive infrastructure. Most of the roads around the world lie in the direct glare of the sun all day and could work very well for generating energy, but putting conventional solar panels on the road is not a practicable idea. But things get entirely different when the roads themselves start generating power.
Solar Roadways, a startup, intends to make it possible for roads to generate electricity. The company is working on solar road panels that would replace the asphalt on the road. The Road Panels will capture the sun’s energy, and use it to light up LEDs that will work as travel lines and even warn motorists of roadblocks or wildlife on the road. Embedded heating elements in the panels will also function to prevent and remove snow and ice from the road. The company was recently awarded a $100,000 grant by the US Department of Transportation for prototyping the Road Panel.
