For the energy-conscious among you Samsung’s latest EcoGreen F4EG hard drive may be of interest. It provides ample storage with 2TB of space, but manages to fit that on just 3 platters.
The advantage of using only 3 platters is an expected drop in power use by 23%, but also a claim to the most dense hard drive yet released rated at 667GB per platter.
As for performance, this is a 5400rpm drive with a 32MB cache and SATA 3GB/s interface. While it doesn’t break any speed records for data transfer, Samsung has managed to increase standby time performance by 19%.
The EcoGreen name doesn’t just mean low power consumption though. Greenpeace will be happy to hear these drives do not use halogens or PCB in their manufacturing.
In terms of price you get 2TB of storage here for $119.99 with additional savings coming from the reduced power consumption. The drive will be available to buy in September.
