Punjab's Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) in Kapurthala town, which saw a spurt in number of tourists last year, is all set to introduce new attractions in 2011, an official said here.
The Rs.100 crore Science City project, around 150 km from here, is a joint venture between the central and Punjab governments. "We would add three new attractions in 2011. A panorama 'Life through the ages' is being set up in a building with an 80-foot diameter dome at a cost of Rs.2 crore. It will provide an insight as to how the earth and the life on it evolved. The gallery is likely to be opened in July," PGSC's director general R.S. Khandpur told reporters here Thursday.
Galleries on 'Science of Sports' and railways too will be set up in the coming months. "'Science of Sports' will be established by March 31 at a cost of Rs.1 crore. It will explain and display the role science plays in the field of sports. It will highlight as to how science has made sports fast and enhanced the capacity and safety of sportspersons," Singh said.
"Ministry of railways is setting up a railway gallery. The highlights of this gallery will be working models of bullet trains and the Delhi Metro. It will also display the technologies used in railways. It would be established at a cost of Rs.90 lakh," he said. The Science City's governing body has also constituted a vision group, consisting of top scientists, to give recommendations about further projects.
"We will be shortly submitting a project proposal to the central government for next phase of development with an estimated expenditure of Rs.30 crore. It will include the setting up of a 5D theatre with special seat movements and environmental effects," he said. Science city, with numerous projects explaining concepts related to the solar system, health, nuclear power and earthquakes, was opened March 19, 2005. Over 18 lakh people have visited the place so far. The place received over 3.5 lakh visitors from April to Dec 2010, most of them students. Spread over an area of 72 acres, the Science City is open all through the year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
