Former state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday slammed Akali Dal-BJP government to mortgage 12 state-owned properties, including a widow home at one Gandhi ashram and residential colonies and a mental hospital site, to raise a Rs 2,100 crore loan.
The ex-Gurdaspur MP was reacting to the TOI report, Punjab goes bust, puts widow home and jails on 'girvi', published on Wednesday.
"Going by what is happening in the bankrupt state, this government could mortgage even the people in the state when nothing else is left. This is a shocking model of development as the refrain of the deputy chief minister all along has been that there is no shortage of funds for development works. This fraud with the people now stands exposed with 12 properties including jails having been mortgaged with the banks to mobilise Rs 2100 crore", said Bajwa.
He called upon the Badals to replicate their family model of development as their business had grown exponentially over the years after coming into power.
"Entire state would have been mortgaged by the time people throw out this thoroughly corrupt and degenerated government next year. He demanded that the centre must declare financial emergency in this border state," he said.
"What is shocking that even the properties like widow home that is Gandhi Vanita Ashram in Jalandhar which Mahatma Gandhi had visited too has been mortgaged," he added.
Bajwa pointed out that this government had so far failed to meet even the basic needs of the people as hospitals were without doctors and medicines and schools without benches, blackboards and teachers and now in the last year, the effort was to appease people at their own
"Such raising of loans could not be justified by any standards and moreover, Sukhbir should disclose the people as to how his business has been proliferating and why the same model could not be applied to the state. The people had also the right to know as to how the state had come to such a pass that might not have happened anywhere else in the country," he said.
