While political parties are yet to announce their candidates for the mayoral elections, city Mayor Poonam Sharma today wrote to UT Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi urging him to hold the poll on January 1 instead of January 6.
The SAD-BJP alliance and some nominated councillors are, however, against the Mayor’s proposal.
The Mayor wrote, “Since the inception of the MC, the election of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor has been held on January 1. However, last year, the poll was held on January 6.”
“In case the poll is held on January 6, the tenure of the next Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor will be six days short of one year as the term of the present councillors will expire on December 31, 2016. Keeping in view the term of the councillors, the poll should be held on January 1,” the Mayor wrote.
The Mayor said she forwarded the proposal after having a telephonic conversation with a “majority of the nominated councillors”. Now, the UT would decide on the Mayoral poll date, she said.
However, the Mayor’s proposal has not gone down well with other councillors.
BJP Leader of the Opposition Arun Sood said last year, it was on the request of all councillors that the date was changed because everybody wanted to spend New Year holidays with the family and friends. The BJP was demanding that the poll be preponed whereas the Congress was demanding that it be postponed from January 1. Finally, the date was postponed to January 6. Nominated councillor MP Kohli said people wanted to celebrate New Year with family members and the poll should not be held on January 1. The Mayor’s proposal has found favour with the BSP. BSP councillor Jannat Jahan said the proposed date suited her as she wanted to celebrate New Year with her family and friends.
