Last year Philips released a 56″ LCD TV for the film lover. It has a 21:9 aspect ratio allowing you to view movies as they were meant to be seen (2.39:1), rather than with borders at the top and bottom. In fact, the display requires borders at the sides for standard TV channels.
Philips has now decided to give the Cinema 21:9 an upgrade to allow for 3D movie viewing. If you are planning on buying the 3D edition of Avatar on Blu-ray, then this is likely going to be one of the best sets to view it on.
The upgrade isn’t going to have a major impact on the price, but it was already high at around $6,000. 3D will be delivered through shutter technology, which uses a transmitter to sync with a pair of 3D glasses.
Philips is expected to show off the updated Cinema 21:9 in Barcelona this week on Wednesday or Thursday. A launch is expected this summer, but unfortunately, you’ll have to acquire a pair of 3D glasses separately.
