The alleged kidnapping of Mohali-based businessman/immigration consultant Karan Arora never took place. He went missing on his own apparently to evade his financial liabilities or around Rs 30 crore. This was stated by the Mohali police today, a day after Arora was recovered from Kudana village in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh.

A senior police officer said on condition of anonymity that during his interrogation, Arora tried to “befool” the police by concocting a story of his “kidnapping by three persons”. However, the story did not last long and soon he confessed during cross-questioning that he went on his own after creating false circumstantial evidence of his kidnapping from near his residence at Khooni Majra village on Wednesday night, said the police officer.
“On Wednesday night, he first dropped his friends, including Inspector Ravinder Singh, SHO of the Chamkaur Sahib police station, at their respective places after a party. He then left his Mercedes car near his residence and went to Manali, where he stayed for two nights. He then went to Panipat and stayed there with a friend. Following news reports of suicide by his Amritsar-based broker Jaspal Setia a couple of days ago, Arora came under pressure and informed the police about his whereabouts through his family members,” said the officer, adding that his family members were aware of his “steps”.
A windowpane of the Mercedes car was found broken and bloodstains were found in the car.
Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Arora’s family had given them in writing that they did not want any action against anybody in the case now.

“Arora and his kin claimed that he was under stress, which led him to concoct the kidnapping story. We got his medical examination conducted at the Mohali Civil Hospital last night and the medical report corroborated the fact,” said the SSP.

Arora was handed over to his family late last night, said the SSP.

The SSP said investigations were on and the police had sent the blood samples found in the car to a forensic laboratory.

Cancellation of FIR
The Mohali police, who had registered a case under Sections 364 and 34 of the IPC against unidentified persons at the Balongi police station, have now started the process of cancellation of the FIR.

Arora under huge debt
Arora, who also runs a sheller at Payal, is under a debt of nearly Rs 30 crore, according to the police. “He has to pay Rs 13 crore to various paddy agents from the mandis of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kotkapura, Makhoo and Gurdaspur. He also has a liability of around Rs 15 crore towards Allahabad Bank. His major properties, including the sheller and a palatial house at Khooni Majra village, have also been mortgaged,” said the police.

Arora, kin avoid media
Arora and his family members avoided mediapersons on Monday. “Nobody is at home. Sahib and memsahib went somewhere in the morning” was the reply of the watchman sitting in front of Arora’s palatial house at Khooni Majra village.

What Shamli police say
According to a police official at the Shamli kotwali in Uttar Pradesh, Arora told the police that he was kidnapped by five persons in Mohali, who blindfolded him and then took him to Kudana village. He told the police that he somehow managed to escape from their clutches after three days and with the help of two youngsters, he managed to contact his family members.
