IGI, two other airports on high alert after threat

NEW DELHI: Three of the country's busiest airports including Delhi's IGI have been put on the highest possible alert following specific intelligence
reports of a likely terror attack in the run-up to the 16th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition on December 6.
While airport security across the country has been beefed up, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has issued a specific terror alert for the airports of Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. According to Intelligence reports, terrorists of foreign origin may try to strike or attempt to hijack aircraft.
TOI had on Tuesday reported the heightened threat perception to the aviation sector around the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary. The intelligence agencies had passed on the information to the ministry of civil aviation.
The government has also introduced multi-level checking and has issued strictures to ensure they are followed judiciously. An additional ladder-point check has also been made compulsory.
Airlines have advised passengers to reach airport at least two hours before the scheduled departure as security checks are expected to take more time now.
In fact, all cabin baggage will now be opened and checked thoroughly. Commandos will also patrol the city side of the airport with LMG-mounted vehicles. The number of flight marshals have also been increased and cabin crew have been asked to look out for problem elements.
