Best idea available
Though Chandigarh is quite neat and clean and less polluted in comparison to Delhi but growing number of vehicles and population has also lead to increased pollution level. In fact, pollution is a man-made calamity and has to be solved by man himself. Many will feel uncomfortable but still this can be the best idea to control growing pollution level.

Not a feasible solution
The even-odd formula for vehicles on alternate days is not feasible. No independent thinking has been done on the problem of pollution and its pragmatic management. An efficient commuting alternative does not exist and there is no plan to put it in place. Unless the public transport system is provided such ideas would do more harm than good to the citizen’s public interests.

A wise move
It is definitely feasible and can be a wise move. Allowing odd-even number vehicles on alternate days can be helpful in curbing pollution.

Public transport is the solution
To check the pollution level, use of public transport needs to be encouraged on a large scale. A futile exercise is being undertaken by some bigwigs to undertake cycle rallies, marathon race and car free day. If we all are serious enough, then Adviser to Administrator should take a lead followed by other functionaries in the UT and pursue residents to use public transport.

Strengthen PTS
To curb it, the Administration should strengthen the public transport system (PTS) by increasing its frequency so that public desist using vehicles. More subsidies should be given to electricity, battery operated and CNG vehicles.

Ban SUVs for limited period
We can’t compare Chandigarh with New Delhi because there are other causes of pollution. Chandigarh has traffic problems in some areas during peak hours. It needs only good traffic management. Instead of even-odd formula, to ban registration of SUVs for a limited time will be welcome step.

Increase cycle tracks
The UT Administration should ban burning of leaves, add more cycle tracks, plant more trees on roadsides and empty spaces to tackle the menace of air pollution.

Chandigarh
Will create more problems
The much-hyped proposal to replicate the odd-even number model is nothing but not feasible for Chandigarh. The proposal will lead to more troubles, for the residents.

New approach needed
Ban old diesel vehicles, permit CNG taxis only, open CNG stations, provide incentives for hybrid vehicles, encourage carpooling by introducing Pool App can be better solutions for tackling rising air pollution.

Method not flawless
The proposed even-odd formula for vehicles on alternate days is not feasible as most of the families own two or more cars. This leaves scope for manipulation. Disbanding diesel cars and rationing petrol per family may be viable idea.

Encourage carpooling
If we want to save our mother earth then we must resort to carpooling, cab-sharing, better public transport system and metro.

Ensure PTS facilities
Following the odd-even formula (though new in India but successful in many countries) will straightaway cut down traffic on roads by 50 per cent. It will be a healthy sign. But before implementing this system, administration must lay down clear guidelines besides ensuring adequate public transport facilities.

Ban luxury vehicles
The even-odd formula should be tried on pilot basis. However, vehicles entering from outside Chandigarh should be exempted. Chandigarh administration besides banning registration of luxury cars and converting taxis and autos to CNG, should improve public transport system, expedite metro project and police to regulate traffic to avoid jams.

Wait & watch
Chandigarh Police and Administration should wait and watch result of of the new system in Delhi and then consider its adoption. Chandigarh lacks underpasses, flyovers, metro rail, bus rapid transport system to control congestion of traffic.

Will cause inconvenience
The proposed odd- even formula is impractical and will create lot of inconvenience for the public. Before introduction of the system, the administration should ensure adequacy and efficiency of the public transport system.

Implement on trial basis
To control traffic and air pollution even-odd formula for vehicles on alternate days is a good option. It can be implemented on trial basis. It will encourage carpooling and optimum utilisation of CTU buses and increase government revenue.

Implement traffic rules
There is an immediate need to upgrade police infrastructure and strict implementation of traffic rules. Traffic should be managed intelligently with less manpower and use of technology should be increased to ensure smooth flow of vehicles.

Chandigarh
Not a practical idea
The even-odd formula for vehicles is not going to work. People will buy another vehicle which will lead to increase in number of vehicles. The practical solution is to ban entry of vehicles within the radius of six km from Sector 17.

Good but not feasible
No doubt that the high level of air pollution is directly affecting health of the residents. Serious efforts are needed to tackle the problem. The concept of even-odd cars formula is good but not practical.

Improvise PTS
Some system has to be introduced to reduce traffic and emission of green house gases. But the public transport system, especially for the cities in periphery of Chandigarh needs to be strengthened before implementing the scheme.

Wait before implementing
In my opinion, IGP should wait till the result of this formula being levied in Delhi and if it is successful then only it should be implemented in Chandigarh.

Chandigarh
Ban diesel vehicles
Improvisation of public transport system and carpooling can reduce air and noise pollution. Diesel vehicles should be banned. 15-years-old buses and trucks should not be allowed to enter city.

Develop public
transport system
The idea of even-odd vehicles will put residents in trouble. To make it feasible public transport system should be strengthened. It should be available at all locations with optimum frequency.

A welcome step
The even-odd formula is a welcome idea. Such a step will help us in reducing the pollution levels and keep the city air clean.
