iFixit have managed to get their hands on a Motorola Atrix and have literally dissected the phone inside and out to uncover how fast the device is, and also how easy it is to repair.
In terms of raw speed, they have confirmed what the specs show on paper that the Atrix is currently the fastest Android phone on the market. It’s not hard to see why with a Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU/GPU combo, 16GB of storage and 1GB of RAM on-board.
However, it does not stop there as the iFixit crew also discovered that the Atrix is the most-repairable smartphone they have ever taken apart. Now we know most people won’t touch their phones under warranty, but if your screen gets damaged, or a component fails further down the line, then you will be able to repair it a lot more easily (and cheaply) than say an iPhone.
iFixit claim that the Atrix was designed for repairability from the word go and it received a 9 out of 10 in their repairability score. It achieved this because there were no proprietary screws, the battery could be easily replaced just by popping off the back cover, and the 4″ LCD wasn’t fused to the front panel glass. The only downside was that there are two central ribbon cables soldered to several components (i.e. the cameras and proximity sensors), which made the cables more costly to replace.
iFixit concluded that the phone was great, but there were two factors stopping it from becoming the ultimate Android phone: the MOTOBLUR software (a social-centric propriety skin) and its anti-root mechanisms.
We can certainly agree on both these points, the first especially, as Motorola’s MOTOBLUR skin on previous phones has led to performance issues and extra battery drains due to its social networking status updates.
