Snowstorms have disrupted the travel schedules of thousands of people in Europe in the last weekend before Christmas.

A heavy blizzard forced Germany's Dusseldorf airport to shut down while operations at the airports in Belgium, France and the UK were badly hit as the cold wave showed no sign of relenting.

In Paris, planes had to be de-iced at the Charles de Gaulle airport on Sunday. France's civil aviation authority ordered the cancellation of 40 per cent of flights out of Paris due to severe weather conditions. At Germany's Dusseldorf airport, there were no take-offs or landings after 9.15 am local time on Sunday.

Some places reported up to two feet of snow on Sunday. Forecasters said this was the heaviest snowfall in the central east coast area of US in over a decade.
